The set centres on Decoding Birdsong, his second record, which arrived eighteen months after his acclaimed debut, Service Station at the End of the Universe. It marks a shift in both sound and scale from that first release, rooted in his background in electronic music. He describes it as combining expansive, immersive production with his usual precision in the lyrics, so the night should lean more towards the electronic side of things than a stripped-back poetry reading.
Szmierek wears a few hats at once — poet, writer and producer — and that comes through in how he builds his songs. The electronic production is the frame, and the lyrics sit right inside it, which is where the 'precision' he talks about comes in. If you've followed him since the debut, Decoding Birdsong is the next step in that direction, and this is one of the nights you can hear it live.
Doors open at 19:00 and the curfew is 23:00, so it's a full evening. General sale tickets are available, and there are VIP packages too if you're after something a bit more. The O2 Academy is at 570 Christchurch Road in Boscombe, BH1 4BH.
