The Great Escape 2026: Music Guide to Brighton

The Great Escape returned to Brighton from 13 to 16 May 2026, once again transforming the seaside city into a massive, multi-venue showcase for emerging music. Often described as the 'Cannes of music', the festival brought over 450 up-and-coming international artists across more than 30 walkable venues, alongside a dedicated pop-up site on Brighton Beach. The beauty of the event lies in its citywide stage design, where everyday pubs, clubs, and independent venues become temporary concert halls. Navigating the festival is relatively simple because Brighton is highly walkable, though seasoned attendees know to avoid the designated bike lanes while moving between gigs. It is also wise to steer clear of West Street—the main route from the station to the seafront—during the late hours, as it tends to get incredibly noisy and congested with standard weekend crowds.

Among the standout programs of the 2026 edition were the extensive showcases hosted by Sounds Australia, which took over key festival hubs. On Thursday 14 May, the showcase occupied both stages at Komedia for the afternoon. The Studio Stage featured performances from Pamela., Bean Magazine, Mitch Santiago, Fool Nelson, and Jamaica Moana, while the Basement Stage hosted JAEL, MUDRAT, Any Young Mechanic, Big Wett, and Way Dynamic. On Saturday 16 May, the Australian contingent moved to the beach, spreading across three stages. The outdoor Ones To Watch Stage featured Flynn Gurry, Loose Content, Salarymen, Darcie Haven, Ngaiire, Charli Lucas, and Teenage Joans. Concurrently, the Deep End Stage saw sets from The Tullamarines, Mel Blue, Jamaica Moana, Matthew Ifield, and sleepazoid, while the Soundwaves Stage hosted Mannequin Death Squad, Sametime, Joan & The Giants, The Gnomes, and Frenzee.

For those looking to explore venues slightly off the main beach strip, the Northern House Showcase at WaterBear MusicBar in Kemptown provided an excellent alternative. Running on Thursday 14 May and Friday 15 May, this showcase split its schedule into afternoon and evening sessions. The Thursday lineup featured Breeze, Lois, Prido, Kenzo Jae, Tian Qiyi, Walt Disco, CHAMP, and LIFE. On Friday, the stage welcomed Miles Temp, Marina Josephina, Lizzie Esau, Noise of Angels, FloodHounds, labyrinthine oceans, The Froot, The 113, and May 8. Other notable names appearing throughout the festival weekend included Gabriella Cilmi and Ruel. With venues ranging from the intimate basement of Komedia to the open-air beach stages, the festival successfully mapped a diverse musical journey across Brighton's iconic coastal landscape.
