They open with Vaughan Williams' Five Mystical Songs, a set of five songs for voice and orchestra (or piano) based on poems by George Herbert. After that comes Wagner's Siegfried Idyll, a short, instrumental piece he wrote as a birthday present for his wife, Cosima. The second half of the night shifts towards the liturgical: Ramírez's Misa Criolla, a mass written in Spanish with rhythms and melodies from Latin America, followed by Dvořák's Mass in D, a large-scale work for choir and orchestra.
Between the English songs, the German instrumental, the Latin American mass, and the Czech mass, it's a broad spread for one evening. The Misa Criolla and the Dvořák mass take up the bulk of the programme, and both are written for choir, so the voices stay front and centre throughout. The Siegfried Idyll is the only part of the night without singing.
