An evocative spoken word storytelling piece inspired by the Selkie myth, featuring music, poetry and song.
The Ballad of Blea Wyke comes to Theatre@41 on Thursday 8 October, a spoken word piece presented in association with Say Owt and Next Door But One. It's a narrative show built around the Selkie myth — those seal-folk of folklore who shed their skins to walk on land — and it weaves together spoken word, music, poetry and song.

The story follows Cerys, a young woman who wants to see the sea. On her eighteenth birthday, she breaks her city's lockdown to find the coastal cliffs that birthed her, the crumbling landscape drawing her back to a mythic past. Along the way, a stranger stands on a cliff and the last grey seal swims towards the shore. It's a reimagining of the Selkie myth set in a not-too-distant future on the North Yorkshire coast, told with a lyrical, evocative voice and a rich backdrop of harmonies.
If you're into spoken word, poetry or storytelling that leans into the atmospheric rather than the plot-heavy, this is exactly that kind of night. It's a narrative piece, so you're following a story from start to finish, and the music and song are woven in rather than sitting as separate interludes. It's aimed at adults and younger audiences who enjoy theatre of the word.
Tickets are available through the venue's official site at tickets.41monkgate.co.uk, and the box office email is boxoffice@41monkgate.co.uk if you've got questions before you book. It's a single night on 8 October at Theatre@41 in York.
