Intergenerational poetry workshop led by Plymouth Laureate of Words R.C. Thomas, inspired by the abstract art of Gillian Ayres.
R.C. Thomas is leading a creative poetry workshop at The Box on Saturday 4 July, from 14:00 to 16:00 in the Foulston Room. It's called Feeling in Colour, and it's an intergenerational session, so it's designed for people of all ages to work together rather than in separate groups.

The starting point is the abstract painting of Gillian Ayres. From there, you'll work with colour, shape and texture through improvisation and gesture, using those as a way to write your own poems in response to the art and the emotions it stirs up. It's described as being for beginners and for anyone who thinks poetry isn't for them, so you don't need to have written a line in your life to get involved.
Thomas is a good hand to have leading it. He's the Plymouth Laureate of Words for 2025–27, has written four poetry books, and has appeared in magazines like Frogpond, Gutter, Modern Haiku and Orbis. He lives right here in Plymouth, so this is local work from a local writer.
The workshop is part of Super Saturday: Summer of Expression, a full day of workshops, performances and family activities at The Box. It's open to everyone aged 8 and over, and children need to be accompanied by an adult. It costs £5 for adults and £3 for children, and you can book your place online or at the shop. The Box is at Tavistock Place, PL4 8AX, and the session runs from 14:00 to 16:00.
