Live entertainment, fun, laughter and Victorian-inspired acts taking place on Kirkgate, the recreated Victorian street within York Castle Museum.
Gala Street Performance kicks off at York Castle Museum on Tuesday 21 July, bringing live entertainment into the heart of the museum's recreated Victorian street, Kirkgate. It's not a one-off; the performances run every Tuesday from that date right through to 25 August, so you've got six weeks to fit it in whenever suits you best.

The whole thing is built around the spirit of the old York Gala, and they've brought it inside. The acts are Victorian-inspired, so expect the kind of street entertainment that would have felt right at home on a real 19th-century high street: live acts, a fair bit of laughter, and a general sense of a day out. Because it's set on Kirkgate, the street itself is part of the experience, and the performances happen throughout the day rather than as a single set, so you can drift in and out as you please.
It's part of the museum's wider summer programme, and it's designed for all ages, which makes it an easy one to bring the kids along to. Since the acts are spread across the day, you don't have to worry about hitting a specific start time—you just turn up and catch whatever's happening while you're there.
On the practical side, the performances are included in the general admission price, so there's no extra ticket to book. The museum also runs on a pay-once-visit-free-all-year policy, which means once you've paid your entry, you can come back as often as you like for the rest of the year without paying again. If you're planning to make a habit of the Tuesday performances, that's a handy thing to keep in mind.
