A two-hour introductory workshop on letterpress printing, covering setting metal type and using a tabletop Adana press, with participants taking home their own printed postcards.
Thin Ice Press is running an Introduction to Letterpress workshop on Saturday 11 July, from 11:00 to 13:00. It's a two-hour session led by Izzy Williamson and Phil Treble, and it's designed as a starting point for anyone who's never touched a press before.

Letterpress is printing from relief — the ink sits on the raised surface of the type, which is then pressed firmly into the paper. Over the course of the morning, you'll work through the basics: setting a line of metal type by hand, locking that form into place, and then pulling your own prints on a tabletop Adana press. It's a tactile, slow process that takes you right back to the physical side of printing, and you'll leave with your own hand-printed postcards to take home.
Thin Ice Press is tucked away in the garden of St Anthony's Hall on Peasholme Green (YO1 7PW), a centre dedicated to keeping traditional printing alive. It's not just a workshop space; it's a working press room, a museum, and a gallery, so you're working in a place that actually lives and breathes this kind of thing. The session is aimed at adults with an interest in printing, typography, and craft, and you don't need any previous experience to join in.
It runs from 11:00 to 13:00 on 11 July, and the cost is £40.
