A family-friendly evening market showcasing local craft, artisan goods, and the Young Trader of the Year competition.
York Makers Market & NMTF Young Trader Showcase takes over Shambles Market on Wednesday 29 July, from 19:30 to 22:00. It's an evening market, so it runs late into the night rather than during the day, and it's built around two things: local craft and a competition for the next generation of traders.

The main draw is the makers market itself, which brings together around 30 local traders selling craft and artisan goods from across Yorkshire. It's a good chance to see what's being made in the region, with a fair few stalls to wander through. Running alongside that is the local heat of the 'Young Trader of the Year Competition', a national initiative by the NMTF to find the traders of the future. Traders aged 16 to 30 compete for a spot in the 2026 regional final, so you'll see a mix of established local makers and younger names still finding their feet.
If you're going with a family, there's plenty to keep everyone occupied. The whole thing is family-friendly, and the food court at Shambles Market stays open throughout the evening, so you can grab something to eat while you're there. It's an outdoor market in a public space, and there's no mention of an entry fee, so it's a free one to drop into.
Behind the scenes, the event is organised by Make It York, with support from Indie York and York BID. It's one of the nights that contributes to York's Purple Flag status, which recognises the city's evening economy. So, if you're around the centre on the 29th, it's an easy one to swing by: Shambles Market, YO1 7LX, 19:30 to 22:00.
