Live talk with historians Suzannah Lipscomb and Kate Williams exploring the political and personal crisis surrounding Mary, Queen of Scots, and Elizabeth I.
Suzannah Lipscomb and Kate Williams are coming to the Grand Opera House on Friday 4 September, for a live talk they've titled To Kill A Queen. Both are historians, and the whole thing centres on Mary, Queen of Scots and Elizabeth I — two women caught up in one of the biggest political and personal crises of the sixteenth century.

They start the conversation at the moment the axe falls at Fotheringhay Castle, and from there they work backwards to trace the chain of events and decisions that led Elizabeth to sign the death warrant for her own cousin. It's not just about the two queens, though; they bring in the wider Tudor world, the spying, the betrayal, and the gender politics of the time. William Cecil and the Babington Plot both feature, so you'll get a sense of the court intrigue that was swirling around them both.
It's a live talk, so the two of them will be on stage discussing it rather than giving a formal lecture. The whole thing runs for an hour and fifty minutes, with a twenty-minute interval in the middle to stretch your legs. It's recommended for ages twelve and up, so it works as a night out for adults or for anyone with a younger history fan in the house.
Tickets go from £14.00 to £50.50, and the talk starts at 19:30. The box office at the Grand Opera House opens ninety minutes before the show, so if you're heading in early you can sort yourself out there; otherwise, you can book at atgtickets.com/york or call 0333 0096690.
