An outdoor 80s celebration concert featuring the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra performing hits from the decade.
The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra are playing Guildhall Square on Saturday 18 July, an outdoor concert they've called Smash Hits: The 80s. It's part of their summer series and one of the events marking the centenary of Portsmouth's city status, so it's a proper open-air affair in the heart of the city.

The set is built around the pop hits of the 1980s, with the BSO taking them on. The list covers a fair bit of ground: Madonna, Michael Jackson, George Michael, Elton John, Bonnie Tyler, Toto, A-Ha, Ultravox, David Bowie, and Eurythmics are all in there, with more to follow. It's the kind of programme where you'll recognise almost every tune, just played by a full orchestra instead of a synth.
Four singers are on the front line: Emma Kershaw, Katie Birtill, Oliver Tompsett, and Patrick Smyth. Pete Harrison is conducting. It's a family-friendly night, so it works as much for a group of friends as it does for taking the kids along.
The concert runs from 19:30 to 22:30, so you're looking at three hours of music under the open sky. Tickets are between £20 and £30, and it's held at Guildhall Square, PO1 2AB.
