Jesus Christ Superstar

Sam Ryder takes the role of Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar, which runs at the Mayflower Theatre from 1 to 11 September 2027. It's part of a UK tour, and the production comes to Southampton after a run in the West End. The musical is Andrew Lloyd Webber's music with Tim Rice's lyrics, and it tells the final days of Jesus' life from Judas' point of view. You'll hear the songs you probably know — 'I Don’t Know How to Love Him', 'Gethsemane', and the title track 'Superstar'.

Behind the scenes, it's a reunion of the creative team from the 2016 production at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. Tim Sheader directs, Drew McOnie handles the choreography, and Tom Scutt is on set design. Producer Michael Harrison describes it as a 'unique vision' that brings that original team back together. It's recommended for ages 10 and up, and children under two aren't admitted. The show includes violence, simulated blood, a depiction of the crucifixion, strobe lighting, visual effects, pyrotechnics, and theatrical smoke.

On Tuesday 7 September at 18:00, there's a Touch Tour for people with visual impairments. It's designed to go with the audio-described performance, letting you get a feel for the set, props, and costumes before the show. There are discounts available, though they don't apply to Friday, Saturday, or Sunday shows, or to seats in Zone F. Group discounts are there for parties of 10 or more, and there's a separate rate for school and youth groups. Mayflower Theatre members get priority booking.
