Major solo exhibition by Simeon Barclay presenting new commissions and reconfigured works as a sculptural environment.
Simeon Barclay has a major solo exhibition, Farewell Sweet Innocence, running at the John Hansard Gallery from 26 June to 29 August. It's a big one for the gallery, and it brings together new commissions and reconfigured works that turn the space into a sculptural environment rather than just a collection of separate pieces.

Barclay is one of the most prominent artists working in the UK right now, and his practice doesn't stick to one medium. He works across sculpture, installation, sound, performance and writing, and he pulls from his own personal history, pop culture, fashion and design to build these environments. The show looks at how domestic objects, memory and identity tie into larger systems of culture, aspiration and exhibition, and it's the kind of thing that asks how we fit into the culture around us.
One of the things that defines his work is the mix of the handmade and the manufactured. He uses found materials and everyday forms, and he's known for letting the personal meet the social and the emotional meet the architectural. Farewell Sweet Innocence does exactly that, with new commissions sitting alongside older works that have been reconfigured for this particular show, so you're seeing both his latest thinking and how he's reworked things from his past.
If you're heading down, the John Hansard Gallery is at 142-144 Above Bar Street, Southampton, SO14 7DU. The exhibition runs until 29 August, and the gallery's phone number is 023 8059 2158 if you need to check opening times before you set off.
